Michael Dowling had reached a point in life when he was unsure of what he wanted to do professionally. He had friends who had chosen Lincoln Tech in New Britain, CT to train for a career, but he wasn’t sure it was right for him. So how did he end up graduating from Lincoln Tech with a path to a medical assistant career? Here’s what Mr. Dowling had to say about his Lincoln Tech experience.
Lincoln: Thank you for speaking with us! Can you tell us a little about your experience with Lincoln Tech?
Dowling: Attending Lincoln Tech was one of the best choices I’ve made in my entire life, and that’s no joke! I was at a point in my life where I really didn’t know what I wanted to do or become. I had seen and heard of many people choosing Lincoln as a path, but I never thought it was for me.
Lincoln: What made you change your mind?
Dowling: I decided to do a little research and I stumbled across information on medical assistant careers, which I had never really considered. I started to look for programs online and read up on what different schools had to offer, and Lincoln Tech really sparked my interest because of the flexibility and the direct path to a career that is in demand.
Lincoln: Once you knew the career you were interested in, what was your next step in getting on that path?
Dowling: I took a chance and contacted the school. They set up an appointment for me to come in and speak with them, and then it’s history from there!
Getting on the path to a medical assistant career
Lincoln: What was your experience like once you were enrolled in the medical assistant career training program at the New Britain campus?
Dowling: I gained a lot of knowledge from the staff and the environment was conducive to learning. I credit the school for helping to put me in a position to really succeed, and then it was up to me to follow through with it. I worked my butt off and got high marks in all the classes!
Lincoln: Tell us about the process of finding employment after graduation?
Dowling: Shortly after graduating I received an interview that the school helped arrange. I went for the interview and got the job as a medical technician. I worked there for about four months, and was then contacted by a few of my former Lincoln Tech classmates about a job opening as a medical assistant at the Hartford Surgery Center, where they were working.
Lincoln: Making connections while at school is so important – you never know where it may lead!
Dowling: I sent over my résumé, got offered an interview and then was offered the job. This job is literally a dream come true. When I first started school at Lincoln, that setting was what I envisioned myself working in. So, after a lot of hard work and dedication – and a lot of help from Lincoln Tech – I gained my dream job as a medical assistant at a surgery center!
