There are hundreds of jobs out there that you may be surprised to learn about. When you are looking for the perfect career for yourself, you should look in unexpected places and consider various paths so that you can find something truly interesting, such as CNC Machining.

With the increased activity in the American manufacturing industry comes an increase in job opportunities. Employers are projected to add more than 56,000 jobs for skilled CNC Machining technicians over the next seven years*, making this a prime time to explore this exciting, rewarding career path.

What is CNC Machining?

Computerized Numerical Control (CNC) Machining is a method used to perform a wide range of manufacturing tasks, which are all carried out by computerized devices. With the help of Computer Aided Design (CAD) and Computer Aided Machining (CAM) in the late 1970s, CNC machines replaced the old-school manual machines.

The new CNC machines were able to be controlled by programming language to carry out a wider variety of tasks with greater accuracy. These machines also allow for a more automated control, which improves productivity.

How do CNC machines Reshape Modern Manufacturing?

CNC Machining is necessary

CNC machine operators work in a wide variety of fields. People from all different pursuits, such as hobbyists and even military groups, take advantage of the cost savings accrued by using CNC machines to turn raw materials into final products. The machines are faster, more efficient and safer, too.

How do I become a CNC technician?

Many technicians and machinists attend a technical school to learn all of the skills necessary to successfully operate these machines, as well as all other aspects of the job., so jumping into a program may be a wise career choice. With a growing manufacturing sector, CNC Machining is taking a very exciting, technology-driven turn.

Lincoln’s CNC Machining and Manufacturing Technology program teaches you the basics, and once you graduate from this comprehensive program you will be able to help transform, for example, a piece of titanium into an artificial hip. An exciting career in CNC Machining means that you will have the ability to take products from the conceptual stage all the way through to the final design. Using metal, wood, plastic and a number of other raw materials, you will be able to construct numerous items from scratch by programming a computer and having a basic understanding of geometric design.

At Lincoln College of Technology in Indianapolis, you will have the unique opportunity to work with equipment from Hurco Companies, an industry leader.  Through this partnership, you will be able to gain experience working with the machinery used in today's most advanced manufacturing facilities. This will help to put you one step ahead of the competition and better prepare you for qualification and credentials from the National Institute for Metalworking Skills (NIMS).  Lincoln enjoys a similar partnership with HAAS Automation at Lincoln College of Technology in Grand Prairie, TX and Lincoln Technical Institute in Mahwah, NJ.

As a Lincoln graduate with a solid foundation of the CNC milling, turning, CAM systems, , and programming, you will be well prepared for the work that you will face every day once you start your career. Most graduates start as an entry-level CNC Machine Operator or Set-up Technician. All of the knowledge and skills you gained will prepare you for various industries like automotive, aviation, military defense, aerospace and other types of advanced manufacturing facilities.
