What Tools are in an Electricians Tool Bag?

Students training at Lincoln Tech for electrical and electronic systems careers build hands-on experience with more than 20 tools throughout their program. These tools range from general tools like pliers and levels to specific equipment such as a tone generator and digital circuit breaker finder. But there are four top tools needed for electronic systems and electrician jobs. We surveyed the instructors at our Union, New Jersey campus to get their expertise on these four essential tools as well as which brands are preferred within the industry.
The Klein 10-in-1 Screwdriver/Nutdriver
The 10-in-1 screwdriver is a versatile tool that comes with 10 commonly used, interchangeable bits, including slotted, Phillips, torx, square recess and nut drivers. Klein Tools, the brand used in Electrical and Electronic Systems Technology training, offers durable, quality screwdrivers. Klein also offers replacement bits and a lifetime guarantee.
Klein 9" High-Leverage Side-Cutting Pliers
Often referred to as the lineman's pliers, high-leverage side-cutting pliers are used to cut, splice and grip electrical wires when doing installation, repairs and maintenance jobs. This Klein tool features induction-hardened cutting knives to ensure a long life, along with a hot-riveted joint to prevent the handle from wobbling.
UEi DL369 Multimeter
A multimeter is a standard diagnostic tool used to measure electrical values, and it often becomes one of the most commonly used tools in a student's bag at Lincoln Tech. Lincoln’s model of choice is the UEi DL369 multimeter, which measures AC and DC amps, AC and DC volts, ohms, capacitance and frequency.
LED Flashlight
It's important to have a clear view of what's in front of you when working with electrical wires, so anyone working in the high- or low-voltage electrical fields should have an LED flashlight handy. LED lights last longer and are often brighter than other types of flashlights, and they are typically inexpensive.
