Seeking Out the Best Career Training Schools in New Jersey
Educators want a partner they can trust for their students – and they find it in Lincoln Tech.
When students are looking for the best career training schools in New Jersey, Lincoln Tech campuses are at the top of their lists. When employers need new talent for their teams, they turn to Lincoln Tech for skilled, trained employees who bring a sense of professionalism and commitment to their careers. And when educators want a partner who can help their students reach the next milestone in their lives, Lincoln Tech schools are here for them.
Lincoln Tech’s Union campus hosted a visit earlier this year from the Newark, NJ chapter of the Knowledge Is Power Program (KIPP), a non-profit group of public charter schools focused on developing students to be college-ready, and career-ready. Joe Mettle, a Career and Technical Education Counselor with KIPP, led a group of rising high school juniors and seniors as they toured the Lincoln campus in May – seeing the industry-standard training facilities up close and getting to meet students and instructors.
“Students were very excited to see the facilities and equipment,” Mettle says. “They enjoyed the atmosphere at the school and know that several past students from KIPP have enrolled at Lincoln Tech and graduated. That helps motivate them.”
While the campus’ Automotive Technology training bays were the most popular stop on the visit, students also had the opportunity to learn about training for careers in the electrical and HVAC industries – including a visit to the on-campus “Green House,” which serves as an. energy auditing trainer. “We know these career fields are growing,” Mettle says, “but the students guide the process through their own interests.”
Those interests can include training not only in auto and skilled trade fields like those offered at Lincoln’s Union campus but also vocational training in Cosmetology, Culinary Arts, I.T., medical billing and coding, and many others. “That’s what makes my job fun,” Mettle says of the wide range of interests among his students.
A Shared Commitment to Student Success
For Mettle, a 15-year education professional, the ultimate measure of a partnership is the results seen by the students. In that regard, he says, “Lincoln Tech has been a great partner. Students come through happy and successful on their way to new careers. I’ve been impressed by Lincoln’s Career Services staff and the support provided in ‘soft skill’ areas like résumé development and job interviews.”
Scholarship opportunities also play a key role in identifying potential partner schools, and Lincoln Tech has made more than $8 million available this year in grants and scholarships to qualified students around the country. Mettle adds that his team evaluates a school’s completion and placement rates, along with opportunities for internships.
The KIPP team begins helping students evaluate potential career paths during their junior year of high school. Mettle says he recommends career training for students who are strong academic performers and also show potential for a shorter route to professional success. He is part of a unit that includes Placement Counselors and Persistence Counselors to help students not only find the right path for them, but to stay the course when they encounter difficulties.
“We serve the underserved,” he says. “We need to make sure we’re giving them all the support they need to become successful in life.”
Part of that support is ensuring each student moves on to the academic setting that’s best for their individual interests and goals after graduating high school. Partnering with the best career training schools in New Jersey is one way educators like Mettle keep their students on the track to promising futures in growing career fields.
