4 Steps to Becoming A Certified Medical Coder

With all the forms and paperwork you fill out during every trip to the doctor's office, it is no surprise that a Certified Coding Associate (CCA) is a necessary role in every medical office. Medical coders  are responsible for reviewing patients' medical records and applying codes, which are based on diagnosis and treatment, for reimbursement and research purposes. In some offices, they are also responsible for maintaining medical records. This requires that they know how to code specific medical procedures and diagnoses, some of which may fall under more than one industry-standard coding system.

While CCA is the name of the profession, it is also the name of the certification that professionals receive through the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA). The Ahima CCA credential distinguishes coders by requiring them to exhibit commitment and demonstrate coding competencies across all settings, including hospitals and physician practices, according to AHIMA.

In order to call yourself a CCA and lay out your path to success as a medical coder, you need to follow a few simple steps:

  1. Before enrolling in Lincoln Tech's medical coding and billing program, earn your high school diploma or equivalent.  If you don’t already have a high school diploma, there are many online options  you can explore to help you complete this important step.
  2. While your education will prepare you to sit for the certification exam, the Lincoln Edge will also help you acquire the skills you need to work hard and study the material. You can even purchase study guides, practice tests and books to further prepare you so you don't sweat the test.
  3. After you feel prepared, find a test center and schedule your exam. Your certification will prove your commitment, competency and professional capability, all traits that employers are eagerly searching for.

More than 8,000 people have obtained the certification since it was created in 2002, and you too can join the league of ambitious, dedicated professionals who are putting their career first.  You can find training for the field at the Lincoln Tech campus in Paramus, NJ.  Get coding, and get on your way to an in-demand career in the healthcare industry!
