Skilled Trades Holds A Wide Variety of In-Demand Jobs

March 26, 2014
The wide variety of in-demand jobs available in the skilled trades

Though many people don't know the benefits that the skilled trades can provide when it comes to a career, they can provide many stable and lucrative job opportunities. What's more, thanks to the skills gap they're always in demand, meaning their employment prospects aren't likely to fade anytime soon. Students thinking about classes at a career training college would do well to consider these options – they may find a prospective new career in the process.

Auto mechanic

Gearheads and racing fans may want to consider becoming an auto mechanic out of the many options available to them, according to College Recruiter – and as tens of millions of new cars are sold every year, they too can be confident that they'll have a fulfilling job for a long time. Mechanics learn the skills and know-how they'll need to correct any issues a car has, whether they're technical or mechanical. They'll also work to fix any problems created during collisions and will often perform other related car work such as fluid changes and quality checkups. Mechanics can work in shops or for themselves – they have a lot of freedom in employment.

Electrician

Electricians are a high-skill, high-demand worker. They'll learn how to wire buildings, how to repair equipment and how to restore power to locations. As construction, renovation and human error will never go away, they too have job security. In addition, the variety of positions they'll gain experience in – electrical theory, electrical code requirements, blueprint and safety measures, for instance – will mean they'll never truly stop learning. They can take up specialization in a wide variety of fields as well.

HVAC Technician

Heating, ventilation and air conditioning are considered prerequisites for any modern building, and HVAC technicians are responsible for keeping them in peak shape. In the field, there's a lot of variety – workers will find themselves on any and every part of a building, from the roof to the basement to outside to even crawl spaces. Duct-work and installation, in addition, drive further job security. HVAC technicians are always in high demand as homeowners and business owners alike will need their buildings hot during the winter and cool during the summer.

Skills gap provides additional security

In the United States, the concept of a skills gap is prominent, as many skilled trades positions like these cannot be filled as because workers don't have the necessary experience. Training at a career training college will ensure workers don't have to worry about this problem – and they'll only be more in demand in coming years, as 92 percent of employers believe there's a skills gap, according to CNBC.

About 22 percent, or more than one in five bosses, said that they see the gap as a lack of technical skills in their workers. Gaining training in a position like this ensures that skilled trades workers won't suffer from this problem. In addition, another 44 percent of employers believe a lack of soft skills will further prevent them from hiring. Training courses will fix this too, helping workers build their communication, critical thinking and collaboration skills.
